Guidelines

Core vaccinations
(recommended for all cats)
*Feline
panleukopenia virus
(distemper), feline
calicivirus, feline herpes
virus-1(rhinotracheitis)
These vaccinations are
administered as a combination
vaccination, DRC.
Kittens should be vaccinated
beginning at 8-9weeks of age
with 2 additional boosters,
administered every 3-4 weeks
of age until 16 weeks old.
Orphaned kittens, weaned
prematurely, should be
vaccinated as early as 6
weeks of age with booster
vaccinations every 3-4 weeks
of age until 16 weeks old.
The DRC is a once yearly
vaccination. For an
adult cat with no previous
known vaccination history,
the DRC is administered in 2
doses at 2-4 weeks apart,
followed by yearly boosters.
*Rabies
The first rabies vaccination
should be given at 14-16
weeks of age, than boostered
one year from the initial
vaccination date. After
an initial 1-year rabies
vaccination, Sioux City
residents will be issued a
2-year rabies.
Residents outside of Sioux
City limits, will be issued a
3-year rabies. If an
adult cat presents with no
previous vaccination history,
the rabies is administered in
2 doses at 12 months apart
initially. Rabies
licensure is available at the
front desk at the time of
vaccination.
Noncore vaccinations
(recommended for cats in high
risk areas)
*Feline leukemia virus (FeLV)
Morningside Veterinary
Hospital PC offers a DRC/FeLV
combination vaccination and
FeLV Merial Vetjet
needle-free injection system.
FeLV is given to kittens
beginning at 8-9 weeks of age
in high risk situations
followed by 2 additional
boosters, administered every
3-4 weeks of age until 16
weeks old. Orphaned
kittens, weaned prematurely,
should be vaccinated as early
as 6 weeks of age with
booster vaccinations every
3-4 weeks of age until 16
weeks old. The FeLV is
a once yearly vaccination.
For an adult cat with no
previous known vaccination
history, the FeLV is
administered in 2 doses at
3-4 weeks apart, followed by
yearly boosters.
*Feline immunodeficiency
virus (FIV)
Feline immunodeficiency virus
(FIV) is administered in the
same manner as FeLV.
*Chlamydophila felis and
Bordatella bronchiseptica

Puppies should receive the
initial dose of DHPPV (Coronavirus
is optional) at 6-8 weeks of age
then booster vaccinations every
3-4 weeks until 12 weeks of age.
Once the puppy is 12 weeks old,
Leptospirosis is added to
the combination shot, DHLPPV.
A booster is given in 3-4 weeks,
with the last vaccination given
at 16 weeks of age. Rabies
is administered at 12-14weeks
old and a second dose in 1 year.
Adults should receive yearly
DHLPPV and Rabies based on city
requirements (every 2 or 3
years).
The non-core vaccinations are
optional on an individual
patient basis. Bordatella
(Kennel Cough) is given to dogs
in high canine exposure areas
such as kennels, groomers, dog
parks, etc. Lyme vaccine
is available for dogs exposed to
wooded areas with tick exposure.
