Morningside Veterinary Hospital PC Vaccination Guidelines
*Based on The American Association of Feline Practitioners

Updated Dec. 12, 2007

Core vaccinations (recommended for all cats)
*Feline panleukopenia virus (distemper), feline calicivirus, feline herpes virus-1(rhinotracheitis)
These vaccinations are administered as a combination vaccination, DRC.  Kittens should be vaccinated beginning at 8-9weeks of age with 2 additional boosters, administered every 3-4 weeks of age until 16 weeks old.  Orphaned kittens, weaned prematurely, should be vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age with booster vaccinations every 3-4 weeks of age until 16 weeks old.  The DRC is a once yearly vaccination.  For an adult cat with no previous known vaccination history, the DRC is administered in 2 doses at 2-4 weeks apart, followed by yearly boosters.

*Rabies
The first rabies vaccination should be given at 14-16 weeks of age, than boostered one year from the initial vaccination date.  After an initial 1-year rabies vaccination, Sioux City residents will be issued a 2-year rabies.  Residents outside of Sioux City limits, will be issued a 3-year rabies.  If an adult cat presents with no previous vaccination history, the rabies is administered in 2 doses at 12 months apart initially.  Rabies licensure is available at the front desk at the time of vaccination.

Noncore vaccinations (recommended for cats in high risk areas)
*Feline leukemia virus (FeLV)
Morningside Veterinary Hospital PC offers a DRC/FeLV combination vaccination and FeLV Merial Vetjet needle-free injection system.  FeLV is given to kittens beginning at 8-9 weeks of age in high risk situations followed by 2 additional boosters, administered every 3-4 weeks of age until 16 weeks old.  Orphaned kittens, weaned prematurely, should be vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age with booster vaccinations every 3-4 weeks of age until 16 weeks old.  The FeLV is a once yearly vaccination.  For an adult cat with no previous known vaccination history, the FeLV is administered in 2 doses at 3-4 weeks apart, followed by yearly boosters.

*Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is administered in the same manner as FeLV.

*Chlamydophila felis and Bordatella bronchiseptica

Not generally recommended (risk of vaccination may be greater than benefit)
*Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) and Giardia
